Tuesday, October 5

1: A load of rebar about to be taken away for recycling. As the truck pulled away, a passerby was heard to say "Well, it now looks for sure that old Fred Hall can never be put back together again."

2: Work continues on the newer section of Fred Hall to build up the roof covering the power substation. The upper two stories will be dismantled in the days to come, and the substation will eventually be enclosed by the new Microbial Sciences Building.

3 through 8: Demolition continues over at the older section of the building.

9 and 10: In the evening, the Komatsu is put through a series of tests in preparation for the delicate work of dismantling the top two stories of the newer section.

11 and 12: A couple early morning views of the backside of Fred Hall which – in the coming evening – will be worked on in spectacular fashion as shown on the next page.

Some Special Notes:

13: In the disturbed soil around the demolition site, various kinds of weeds are seen to be thriving – including this large first-year mullein which, if left alone (or successfully transplanted by some anonymous mullein enthusiast), will probably shoot up at least six feet next summer. Photo was taken on October 6, and the plant was still observed in a green, healthy state throughout the mild, snowless month of November; a photo taken Nov. 30 is here.

14 and 15: Those interested in the demolition and building process on this site can follow the action on their computers with the live webcam. (A second webcam became operational later in October.) A composite of four webcam shots from October 5 is shown in Photo 15.
